I’m excited to announce that Julian Brown and I are be participating in our first international residency as an artist duo! Curated by Contemporary Collective, we are stationed at the Art Yard Maker’s Studio within the Bankside Hotel in London, England.
Creating and Exhibiting in a Public Space
Over the course of eight weeks we will be creating and exhibiting a new body of work within the Art Yard Studio, which will be open to the public. This ground-level space in Central London features expansive windows and direct access to a public courtyard and street. By creating art in such an accessible space, we aim to break down barriers between the act of creation and the viewing public. We invite people passing by to chat with us and engage with both our works-in-progress and our finished worlds.
Studio Hours and Appointments
We will be working in the studio space between July 3rd and August 26th. Each week, I will post our specific hours here, but we can also arrange studio visits by appointment. To ensure there is work to see right away, I will be bringing some finished paintings from my studio to display in the space. Throughout the summer, we will be adding new augmented reality and paintings to the studio, leading up to the end-of-residency celebration event on Thursday, August 22nd.Studio Hours: It's our FINAL week in the studio! We are also available by appointment.
Monday Aug 19: 12 - 4pm
Tuesday Aug 20: 10am - 4pm
Wednesday Aug 21: 10am - 4pm
Thursday Aug 22: 6 - 8pm (final event!)
End of Residency Celebration: Thursday, August 22nd, 6-8pm
Location: Art Yard Maker’s Studio, Bankside Hotel, 2 Blackfriars Rd, Upper Ground, London UK, SE1 9JU

Exploring Local Imagery
Our creative goals for this residency build on our previous projects, which imagined futures affected by climate change. We focus on how climate change impacts cities, using our experiences traveling around Canada as inspiration. Our new work will blend images of London's buildings, bridges, waterways and trees to create possible future scenarios. By showing how urban development and nature interact, we hope to encourage people to stop, think and take action for a sustainable future. Our art aims to raise awareness about climate change, engage a wide audience, and spark important conversations about protecting the environment.
Taking Creative Risks
The extended time frame of this residency allows us to delve deep into our creative process, empowering us to take risks with our artistic ideas and techniques. I will push the limits of my technique by working on a new material—aluminum panels—at a smaller scale. Having worked on aluminum for large-scale murals in the past, I've learned many tricks and techniques that I plan to apply to these smaller works. We will also explore innovative ways to integrate physical paintings with AR technology, moving beyond the typical small QR code on the wall and inviting audiences to engage in dynamic interactions between the tangible and the digital.
About the Residency
Since 2018, Contemporary Collective and Bankside Hotel have partnered on this recurring artist-in-residence program, offering valuable support to participating artists. This includes free, unlimited access to studio space, three daily meals, and promotion through various events and press opportunities. Bankside prides itself as an arts and culture hotel destination, with a large collection and a strong commitment to the arts.
We can’t wait to share this journey with you and hope you will join us in London to experience our work and the creative process up close!
