The Brush Returns
The Brush Returns was on view in June 2026 at Remote Gallery in Toronto. This solo exhibition featured new paintings alongside works from Shackleton’s studio inventory, tracing the evolution of her practice. Gallery A showcased new work, while Gallery B presented brushless paintings created between 2013 and 2024.
About the Show
The Brush Returns marks a turning point in Shackleton’s practice. After nearly 15 years of working without brushes on canvas, she has allowed herself to pick one up again. What began as a self-imposed challenge to embrace gravity evolved into an internationally recognized technique. Yet over time, that recognition also became a creative restriction.
Returning to the brush feels risky, vulnerable, and exciting all at once. This new body of work is about letting go of old rules and allowing her technique to evolve—bringing brushes and drips together to bring nature back into the city.
